Achy jaw, bruised teeth in the morning, headaches can all be down to grinding or clenching your teeth.

This condition is also known as bruxism and it is a problem that affects the majority of people at some point in their life. If left untreated, tooth grinding can lead to toothwear, fractures, pain, jaw problems (TMJ disorder), and headaches. We know it can get worse when you are stressed or run-down. The good news is there are things we can do to help.

How do you make it better?

Sometimes our dentists will just advise simple changes to your routine to see if that helps – it’s always best to come in for a thorough examination. If you require treatment for the grinding or clenching then the most common method is for us to provide some kind of dental splint. We offer several here at Cwtch Dental:

  • Nightguards
  • Soft mouthguards – often called a soft splint
  • SCi – small splint designed to fit over just the front teeth

What is different about the SCi option?

SCi is the shortened term for the Sleep Clench Inhibitor and it is the most clinically effective FDA-approved treatment option for TMJ disorder, bruxism, and medically diagnosed migraines.

The SCi reduces the intensity of the stress going through the small muscles that open and close your jaw. This little splint eliminates posterior and canine teeth contact, which reduces the temporalis muscle (in your temple) from clenching.

Try it at home!

To see how SCi can help, take a pencil and place it between your molars (back teeth) or canines (fang teeth).

With your fingers, feel the temporalis muscle in the temple area bulge. Then move the pencil to be between your very front (incisor) teeth, then feel the same temporalis muscle again.

Can you feel the difference? On average the stress levels in the muscle reduce by around 70% in studies.
